4FitnessGirls: A Personal Trainer in Your Pocket, Built in Nine Months
4FitnessGirls (#4FG) set out to be a personal trainer in every woman’s pocket: exercise programs for different goals, venues, and difficulty levels, nutrition and water tracking, pregnancy-safe training, and integration with Apple Health, Google Fit, and fitness gadgets. Envion designed and built the native iOS and Android apps in about nine months, launched both simultaneously in July 2018, and engineered a proprietary encrypted video-delivery mechanism to protect the client’s premium content. In 2019 the app caught Apple’s attention and was shortlisted as a candidate for a top application in the US Fitness category.

The challenge
#4FG is a startup founded by professional fitness coaches from different countries. Their ambition was a complex, fully native pair of apps — not a compromise cross-platform shell — that would genuinely act as a personal trainer: training programs varied by goal, venue, and difficulty; nutrition plans and water regimen; specialized programs for pregnant women; streaming video of every exercise; premium content with its own storage and delivery; activity reports; and recurrent auto-subscription plans.
On top of the feature scope, the product had to integrate with the open health ecosystem — Apple Health and AirPlay, Google Fit, fitness trackers and biometric sensors — and deliver streaming video worldwide without exposing premium content to piracy on open platforms.
Decision path
The planning stage deliberately front-loaded the hard problems: the meal-plan and nutrition system, pregnancy-safe training, per-exercise video, and IoT connectivity were all designed in before the first build, rather than retrofitted later.
Two engineering decisions defined the project. First, content protection: Envion proposed and built a proprietary mechanism for delivering streaming video inside the app, bypassing open platforms, with encryption that protected the client’s copyright — the business model depended on it. Second, global delivery: geoDNS deployed across the main geographic locations, optimized traffic delivery, and packing algorithms that compressed fitness-program packages for optimal delivery to devices.
Both apps were built natively and launched simultaneously on the two platforms in July 2018.
Envion contribution
Envion delivered the complete product: native iOS (Objective-C/Swift) and Android (Kotlin, Android Jetpack, MVVM, Room) applications, the subscription and monetization system, the nutrition and water-regimen modules, pregnancy-safe training programs, activity reporting, health-platform and wearable integrations, and the AWS-backed infrastructure with geoDNS and traffic optimization.
Beyond the original brief, Envion integrated an AI-smart fitness assistant that monitors workout and nutrition adherence and reminds users of upcoming activities.
Delivery
Version 1 took about nine months from planning to simultaneous launch on the App Store and Google Play in July 2018. The technical stack — Kotlin, Android Jetpack, Objective-C, Swift, MVVM, Room, AWS, with GoogleSignIn, FacebookSDK, ZendeskSDK, and Pushwoosh — was chosen for native performance and long-term maintainability on both platforms.
The video-delivery system deserves specific mention: premium fitness content was the client's crown jewel, so Envion engineered encrypted in-app streaming with its own storage and delivery system rather than relying on open video platforms.
Outcome and evidence
The apps launched on both platforms simultaneously in July 2018, about nine months after development began. In 2019, 4FitnessGirls was one of the strongest products in the emerging US fitness market and caught Apple's attention, which shortlisted it as a candidate for a top application in the Fitness category in the USA.
The architecture decisions — native builds, encrypted content delivery, geoDNS distribution — gave the startup a product it could scale and monetize globally from day one.
