SMAV: A Connected Monitoring Platform for Precision Agriculture

SMAV, a European agriculture company, wanted to improve how gardens and farms monitor and manage growing conditions in challenging climates. Envion designed and built a connected monitoring solution that integrated temperature sensors with existing agricultural machines and control systems: live air and soil data collected into a centralized IoT platform, visualized through clear graphs, and — when readings moved outside predefined ranges — heaters and fans activated automatically to stabilize the growing environment. The result is a smarter, more responsive farming infrastructure and a scalable foundation for precision agriculture, with room for remote equipment management, predictive alerts, automated irrigation, and data-driven crop optimization.

SMAV: A Connected Monitoring Platform for Precision Agriculture
01

The challenge

SMAV wanted to improve how gardens and farms monitor and manage growing conditions in challenging climates. The project focused on connecting agricultural equipment and permafrost machines to a centralized IoT platform capable of collecting real-time data from the air, soil, and cultivation areas.

Without a connected view of conditions, changes were spotted late, responses were manual, and crops were exposed to cold snaps that a faster reaction could have prevented.

02

Decision path

Envion designed a connected monitoring solution that integrated temperature sensors with existing agricultural machines and control systems. Rather than replacing equipment, the platform connected to what SMAV already operated — field devices, machinery, and control systems — and turned them into one system.

Live temperature data from air and soil was collected centrally and visualized through clear, easy-to-read graphs, allowing farmers and operators to track conditions over time. This made it easier to identify changes, detect potential risks, and make informed decisions about crop protection.

03

Envion contribution

The system also enabled the smart activation of heaters and fans. When temperature readings moved outside predefined ranges, connected equipment could start automatically to stabilize the growing environment.

These automated responses helped protect plants from cold conditions, maintain suitable temperatures, and support more consistent harvests — without requiring an operator to be watching a dashboard at the moment conditions turned.

04

Delivery

By connecting field devices, agricultural machinery, real-time data, and automated controls, Envion helped SMAV establish a smarter and more responsive farming infrastructure.

The architecture was designed as a platform, not a one-off integration — so each new device type, field, or capability extends the same foundation rather than starting over.

05

Outcome and evidence

The solution created a scalable foundation for precision agriculture, with potential for future capabilities such as remote equipment management, predictive alerts, automated irrigation, and data-driven crop optimization.

SMAV's team now monitors air and soil temperatures in real time across gardens and farms, responds faster to changes, and automates heaters and fans when necessary — protecting crops and creating better conditions for a successful harvest.

Client feedback

What the client says about this engagement

“The IoT solution gives us a much clearer view of conditions across our gardens and farms. We can monitor air and soil temperatures in real time, respond faster to changes, and automate heaters and fans when necessary. This helps us protect the crops and create better conditions for a successful harvest.”
