The challenge

An industrial equipment manufacturer was preparing to launch a connected version of its machinery. The company wanted to offer remote monitoring, maintenance alerts, and performance analytics, but needed to determine which data should be collected, how devices would communicate, and how the connected service could operate reliably in demanding environments.

The risk was familiar: committing to hardware, connectivity and cloud choices before knowing whether they fit the environments the equipment actually works in — and discovering the mismatch after the launch.

Decision path

Envion helped define the end-to-end connected product strategy before hardware and cloud commitments locked in. This included selecting suitable sensors, evaluating connectivity options, designing the device-to-cloud architecture, and establishing data pipelines for equipment telemetry.

For industrial equipment, a connected feature that compromises the reliability of the core product is worse than no connected feature — so the architecture was designed to add capability without touching the machinery's primary function.

Delivery

The engagement produced a complete device-to-cloud design the manufacturer's team could build against: sensor specification, connectivity selection, telemetry pipelines, and the security model — sequenced so the connected service could launch without blocking the core product roadmap.

Outcome and evidence

The resulting architecture enabled the manufacturer to monitor equipment health, identify potential failures earlier, and provide customers with actionable insights.

The connected service also created opportunities for new digital offerings, including usage-based services, remote diagnostics, and predictive maintenance — without compromising the reliability of the core product.
